Client Spotlight: Two Rivers Distillery

WE HAVE SO MANY CLIENTS DOING AMAZING THINGS IN THEIR BUSINESSES AND IN THE COMMUNITY. EACH MONTH, ALLISON MEETS WITH A CLIENT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT WHAT THEY’RE UP TO SO WE CAN SHARE THEIR STORY. THIS MONTH ALLISON AND BEN MET WITH MARK AND PAT FROM TWO RIVERS DISTILLERY.

Meet Mark and Pat, the creators of Two Rivers Distillery! They recently opened their doors and are delivering a unique and memorable craft distilling experience. Ben and I toured the cool new facility on Valentine’s Day and were shown how it’s all made; from the receiver, heat exchanger, fermenter, to the still—the gorgeous copper pot (nicknamed “Eleanor”) that sits majestically behind the bar. They have a tasting room with a super cool vibe where their loyal customers can sit just a few feet away from that gorgeous copper still that made the spirits in their drink. How cool is that?!?!  

It was fun to see where they hand pour their bottles as well as the pride in Mark and Pat’s faces while they speak so lovingly about their carefully crafted product. They love coming into work each day and they know their process inside and out (there’s a ton of science that goes into it but it’s also an art). They select top quality ingredients and are passionate about keeping those as local as possible. In fact, around 99% of their ingredients in each bottle are grown/produced within 100 miles of the distillery here in Calgary, which is super cool because we are all about supporting local business!

All business owners know that nothing goes exactly the way we plan, and Mark and Pat experienced their own share of setbacks getting things up and running. The distilling industry is heavily regulated by the feds, the province and the city. The City of Calgary regulations were the biggest obstacle for Mark and Pat, turning the anticipated 5-month buildout into a 13-month process.

Like true entrepreneurs, they told us the unexpected delay was a blessing in some ways (that’s the kind of resilience and confidence all business owners need, right?!). It gave them the opportunity to focus on the details of the space and add some finishing elements to their tasting room. It also gave them time to tweak and perfect recipes, like their Coffee Vodka and beautiful Cockscomb Hibiscus Gin (a deep, rich pink coloured spirit with a super cool tough-looking rooster on the label that you would not want to mess with!). They also make whiskey (it’s a 3-year process so you’ll have to be patient) and will be introducing more seasonal products soon; they’re just waiting for the botanicals to grow!
